ALTAMURA

Altamura is an italian town located in the region of Apulia, in southern Italy,on one of the hills of the  Murge  plateau in the Metropolitan City of Bari. The city is known for its particular quality of  bread  called Pane di Altamura, which is sold in numerous other Italian cities. Pane di Altamura PDO can be kept for a few days in a dry place. It is excellent eaten sliced with extra virgin olive oil and salt, at times with the addition of tomatoes. Perfect as an appetizer or in any other type of dish, there are many traditional recipes based on this bread, like waffles with baby tomatoes, onions, potatoes and olives or Zuppa Povera, made with cubes of fresh toasted bread, tomatoes, oregano, basil, fresh garlic, salt and extra virgin olive oil. Another speciality of this city is Padre Peppe,a walnut liqueur that is based on an ancient recipe that was first developed by a Capuchin Giuseppe Ronchi. In 1832, the Striccoli family used the monk’s recipe to create their version, named Padre Peppe. The liqueur is produced by macerating green walnuts in alcohol, together with other botanicals. The macerate is then aged for four years, before it is diluted, flavored, sweetened, and colored with caramel. Padre Peppe is dark, intense, and subtly bitter with typical herbaceous, spicy, and walnut aromas and flavors.

Walking in the historic center of Altamura, it is possible to find the “Forno di Santa Chiara”, an old oven that produces and sells directly bread, pizza, taralli and biscuits. It’s not expensive.(  Via Luca Martucci 10, 70022 Altamura, Italia ;+39 329 152 4177)
