Monastery of Santa Maria di Colonna[modifica]

The Monastero of Santa Maria di Colonna is a famous monument located in Trani that was made, as tradition says, in the very first years of the XI century. The monastery was originally owned by some Benedictine monks, who suffered multiple lootings and robberies from the saracen pirates. Those pirates also destroyed part of the original wall and stole a crucifix that was said to be bleeding after someone cut the nose of the Christ. The monastery is Romanesque and was built on a previous building in which the sculptural remains, remain. It’s attached to the church and has a rose window on the main façade, while on the inside it’s divided by aisles and has a golden altar. In the last decades, the exterior was enriched with a bronze portal. This particular place was also source of important archeological discoveries, in which they found some objects from the iron age and even two tombs with some bodies.
