| Descrizione | The sorry state of the final resting place of a man who ruled Delhi for thirteen years. Mubarak Shah of the Sayyid Dynasty of Delhi Sultante who held sway over the Northern India in the interregnum between the Tughlaq and the Lodhi rules is a lesser known historical figure. Though his father Khizir Khan who notionally founded the dynasty, also ruled over Delhi, he was content to do so as a vassal of the Timurids. Mubarak Shah was the first Sayyid to call himself Sultan and to mint coins in his name. He also tried to set up a new capital for his kingdom in what is today a crowded and dirty urban village nestled between the posh residential colonies of Defence Colony and South Extension Part I. This village, Kotla Mubrakakpur also has many archeologically important buildings including the Sultan’s Mausoleum. The whole area of the tomb has been usurped and encroached by squatters, hawkers and street vendors. It is when you see the plight of the tomb of the Emperor of India in such sorry state that one is reminded of th futility of wealth, power and fame! In fact Mubarak Shah was not only an efficient and able ruler but also one who genuinely cared for his subjects and a very munificent and kind hearter person as well. To consider that persons like Safdarjung whose qualities of head and heart are questionable got better treatment by posterity, even forgiving his son the sacrilege of ripping off the marble claddings off the dome of the tomb of no less a person than Abdul Rahim Kan-i-khana, step son of akbar, Commander of the Mughal Army, well known scholar and a great poet of the Bhakti movement. |
