Roccaranieri è una frazione del comune di Longone Sabino, in Lazio, situata nella Valle del Salto a 708 m s.l.m. Il borgo, immerso in un contesto montano e boschivo, conserva un’atmosfera autentica e tranquilla.

Le origini del borgo risalgono all’epoca romana: nel 1998 nella Valle San Giovanni è stata rinvenuta una fistula acquaria con iscrizione latina. Nel Medioevo la zona era nota come Massa Pretorii e si sviluppò attorno alla chiesa di San Giovanni Battista. Il borgo, di origine longobarda, fu fortificato nel XII secolo sotto Federico Barbarossa e appartenne in origine all'Abbazia di Farfa e successivamente all'Abbazia di San Salvatore Maggiore.

Cosa vedere

Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista

Situata nella Valle San Giovanni, fuori dalle mura del borgo, è una chiesa altomedievale su base romana, con pianta rettangolare, abside e copertura a capanna.

Fosso di Roccaranieri

Forra naturale spettacolare, caratterizzata da gole scolpite dall’acqua, vegetazione rigogliosa e piscine naturali. Meta ideale per canyoning ed escursioni.

  • Monti del Cicolano – da Roccaranieri a Cenciara, passando per le cascate dei Fossi della Mola (14 km, dislivello 577 m).
  • Percorsi verso la Cascata delle Mole, il Castello di Calcariola e la Fonte Vecchia.

Sentieri

L’Associazione locale RAICA sta realizzando, con il progetto RSA – Rete Sentieristica dell’Abbazia di San Salvatore Maggiore ( con il prezioso contributo Ing. P.O.) una rete di percorsi tra i borghi della zona. Il Sentiero 01: Valle del Salto – segue un antico tracciato abbaziale, oggi ripristinato e segnalato. Lungo il cammino si incontrano boschi, gradinate in pietra, selciati storici e muretti a secco, testimonianze della manutenzione secolare effettuata dalla comunità.
