Cenni storici
[modifica]The origins of Peschici date back to the year 970 a.C. when Sueripolo, captain of the Slavs, drove the Saracens away from Monte Gargano and ordered the foundation of the Pesclizio castle. Many other documents testify the Slavic presence on the territory; the name of Peschici is thought to be of Slavic origin, in fact
the Slavic place names pjèskusa indicates sandy soil.
In the following century the city passed under the rief of Monte Sant'Angelo donated by Guglielmo II to his wife Giovanna of England. At the end of the middle Ages, because of the disputes between papacy and the empire the city went through crucial moments.
In the 16th century to avoid the continuous looting by the Saracen pirates, coastal towers were built and today visible: the most famous is that of Monte Pucci which situated on a high limestone rock has lost its defensive function and has only a symbolic value.
