Acquaviva delle fonti is an Italian town in the metropolitan city of Bari, in Puglia.

Acquaviva owes its name to the large aquifer that flows in its subsoil.

History

The teories relating to the origins of Acquaviva delle fonti would make the first settlements date back to the IV-V century.

In 1976 human skeletons were found, testimony to the fact that the place was permanently inhabited.

The inhabitants moved to the valle, problably attracted by the fertility of the land and the richness of the waters.

After the conquest of many populations, Acquaviva bacame of the kingdom of Italy in 1861, later it was called "Acquaviva delle fonti".

Territory

Acquaviva rises in an exceptional natural context characterized, to the north, by the presence, in the soil, of Bari limestone and, sometimes, by limestone outcrops accompanied by numerous vineyards, orchards and olive groves. To the south, where the limestone of Altamura prevails, the altimetric elevations increase and the agricultural landscape gives way to relict woods, arable land and pastures as well as almond and olive groves.

  • Calzone festival

One of the oldest festivals is that of "DEL CALZONE", born in 1971 by a man who loved his land and its traditions: GIUSEPPE CIRIELLI

The festival takes place every third weekend of October with food and wine stands and stage for live performances in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, a square called by all the inhabitants "the old garden".

This tradition was born in 1848, when the first hot air balloon was launched, the Dalò family handed down the secret to building this paper giant and making it fly in the sky of Acquaviva delle Fonti.
