Like all tourist sites, especially those by the sea, Polignano a Mare has its own spectacular charm. We are in front of a small town, in the province of Bari, which stretches out towards the Adriatic Sea. Polignano A Mare attracts a lot of tourists who are enchanted by this amazing place that seems to be almost a painting. In fact, the best photo of Wiki Loves Monuments Italia 2020 (the biggest photo contest in the world involving more than 50 States collecting images of monuments to document the historical and cultural heritage of each nation) is a shot by Nicola Abbrescia representing Polignano a Mare whipped by the stormy sea.

LAMA MONACHILE What is "Lama Monachile"? It consists of two rock walls falling sheer to the sea and a small inlet in the middle; it seems that the name "monachile" derives from the fact that originally there were many nun seals here (foche monache in italian). It is located along the ancient Via Traiana, built by the Emperor Trajan to connect Rome to Brindisi, and was used in the past as a port of call for ships coming from the East. From the Ponte Borbonico that overlooks it, 15 metres high, it is possible to observe and access the whole cove by a staircase that offers incredible views.

GROTTA PALAZZESE This cave, belonging to the Leto family palace, is nothing more than a cave in the rock overlooking the sea. Today it houses a luxury restaurant, one of the 25 most beautiful in the world, but it seems that in the past it had already been the scene of events of a certain level (as evidenced by a painting by the French painter Desprez).

HISTORICAL CENTRE The most interesting area of Polignano a Mare in my opinion is the small historical centre, which can be reached passing under the Arco Marchesale so called Arco della Porta. White houses and flowered balconies, streets that resist the passage of time represent a unique, poetic and magical touch. The historical centre of Polignano is full of poems written in the most unthinkable corners (on the ground, on the walls, on the doors) by the now famous "Guido, the Flaneur".

The historical centre of Polignano a Mare is full of ancient history: along the flowery streets and around the small squares we find cultures and stories of the past, churches and buildings that evoke stories of Arab, Byzantine, Norman, Spanish, Roman conquests, embracing several styles in contrast with each other. Among the most beautiful things to see in the centre of Polignano stands out the Palazzo dell'Orologio, a whitewashed building whose clock is still hand-wound by the lady who lives there.

SEA CAVES On the coast of Polignano a Mare today there are more than 70 sea caves that have been formed due to erosion phenomena linked to the action of the sea and the wind. To visit them you have to take part in one of the many boat tours that last about two hours and that are held (almost) all year round and that when it is hot also include stops for a dip in the clear waters close to the caves. It is something that must be done!!!

If you love the sea and the picturesque quiet places that promise only nature and relax, then you cannot miss a vacation in Polignano A Mare.
